We are looking for a Summer Associate AmeriCorps VISTA Intern to join the Spice Kitchen team.

Title: Spice Kitchen Summer Associate AmeriCorps VISTA
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
Start Date: June 2020

The Summer Associate AmeriCorps VISTA will focus on liaising market access by increasing program and entrepreneur capacity at various seasonal events while also researching and developing guides to scale businesses into new market avenues such as packaged products, online catering platforms, boxed lunch delivery, and café and storefront opportunities.

Responsibilities:

The Summer Associate AmeriCorps VISTA will primarily be responsible for the following:

  1. Support Spice Kitchen participants to access market opportunities including assisting participants to register for online market access platforms such as EZ Cater, Grub Hub or other identified e-commerce platform.

  2. Support Spice Kitchen participants to successfully apply for, set-up and sell at farmers markets and special events.

  3. Assist participants, with the support of Spice Kitchen staff, to research packaging and product standards to develop packaged products with FDA compliant labeling. Assist participants to access markets to sell developed packaged products.

  4. Assist staff to research and refine café and storefront concept.

  5. Develop materials and implement a series of workshops for entrepreneurs preparing to sell products in the café and storefront.

  6. Assist staff to develop standard operating procedures for the storefront and make into user-friendly fact sheets in various languages.

Requirements

  • Must be able to clear an FBI Criminal Background Check.

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed undergraduate degree.

  • Experience and/or interest in food service and social justice issues a must.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of different linguistic backgrounds.

  • Must be able to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.

  • Has or is willing to get Utah Food Handler’s Certification in the first week.

  • Highly organized with excellent time and space management skills.

  • Patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor a must.

  • Ability to speak passionately and articulately about our mission.

  • A love for food and the willingness to try almost anything.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.and be standing for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to drive a vehicle, valid and current driver’s license with proof of insurance and good driving record.

This position is full-time at 40 hours/week for 10 weeks.

This position reports to Jackie Rodabaugh, the Community Relations Coordinator.

Spice Kitchen Incubator is a project of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), and was founded in partnership with Salt Lake County. It is a business incubator that brings together refugees and other disadvantaged community members interested in starting a full or part-time food business. Spice Kitchen Incubator ensures participants receive technical assistance and training, have affordable access to commercial kitchen space and learn the steps to establishing a successful food business.
