WELCOMING SALT LAKE: SEPTEMBER, 2018

(Sept. 2018) - Welcoming Salt Lake is an annual celebration bringing together people and local events that celebrate the contributions of immigrants and refugees and the role community’s play to foster greater welcome for everyone.

Sep 1-23 – New Americans Portrait Exhibit
Welcoming Salt Lake raises awareness of the economic and cultural contributions immigrants bring to the Salt Lake community. This portrait exhibit shows prominent leaders alongside immigrants to demonstrate that Salt Lake County is a welcoming county.

Sep 15 – Mexican Independence Day 6:00 - 10:00 pm
A celebration for the entire family with live music and dances, authentic snacks and the official Grito civic ceremony. Sponsored by the Consulate of Mexico.

Sept 17 & 19 – Essentials Kits for Refugees
Support refugees with an "Essentials Kit" by filling a reusable bag with everything in the picture (10 razors, 2 toothbrushes, 1 tube toothpaste, 6-pack toilet paper, 1 large pack thick maxi pads, 2 bars of soap,1 stick deodorant.)
Drop-Off: Monday, September 17 and Wednesday, September 19, 10:30 am - 3:00 pm at the Serve Refugee Sharehouse located at Lincoln Elementary, 3700 S 450 E, Salt Lake City (portable classroom in the north parking lot).

Sept 21 – Welcoming Week Celebration 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Salt Lake County Library is celebrating Welcoming Week with a private tour of their West Jordan Branch along with stories, songs, and crafts. Bring your family, friends and neighbors to sign up for your free County Library card.

Sept 22 – Citizenship Application Assistance Workshop 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Learn more about how to apply for U.S. citizenship. Meet with lawyers and legal representatives to get started on your application, check the status of your application, and find out if you are eligible to waive the citizenship application fee. Bring your permanent resident card, recent tax return, and recent address and employment history with you.

Sept 27 – Forced to Flee: Refugee Camp Exhibit 5:00 - 7:30 pm
Join Catholic Community Services of Utah to experience the journey of a refugee as they guide you through the mock process of becoming a refugee and resettlement process. This is a great event for the whole family and opportunity to teach children about refugees around the world.
Admission is FREE. Donations will be accepted at the event.

Welcoming America is pleased to congratulate Salt Lake County and Louisville Metro Government for achieving the status of Certified Welcoming and joining the growing Certified Welcoming movement.
